If somebody has a copyright, it means that their intellectual work is protected, and they have sole rights for distribution and use. If somebody wants to use copyrighted work, they must give attribution to the owner. Fair use sets the laws for using copyrighted work. It determines how a work is used, how much, and how its' use impacts the value. This allows people to use materials for purposes of education. As a teacher, I would use a Creative Commons license to specify how other teachers or students would be able to use my work. For students creating their own works, I would enforce that work should be full of citations, and that there is a difference between non-profit and for-profit organizations which impacts usage rights.
Academic dishonesty can be seen in forms such as forgery, plagiarism, or cheating. It is especially seen when technology is involved--for example, a student might plagiarize in an essay by copying and pasting from a published article. It could also be seen by two students copying each other's homework even if the directions stated otherwise. To be honest, other than plagiarism, I would say that it's okay to cheat. This might sound controversial, but I have heard great success stories where the students no longer have a motivation to cheat. Or, I would make assignments open note. This discourages copying other work, and it prepares students for the real world. Decreased productivity could be met with a token reward system, or any other positive reinforcement. For example, if you critically read one chapter during this meeting session, you will receive a token. 10 tokens can be exchanged for a small treat.
Hi Student's World!
ReplyDeleteIt was really interesting to read your perspective on certain aspects of cheating. I would have to agree that the idea of open note exams has proven to decrease student's motivation of cheating, for all their materials are present in front of them. I have also considered how this might even help recall of information because students are more likely to remember where they jotted things down in their notes and the ideas that accompanied a specific topic. Your Newsletter also looks awesome! It is very organized and not too overwhelming or distracting with lots of color; you used white space well.
Hi Student's World,
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point of using a Powerpoint with graphics as a way to keep the class engaged. I think to add to it, I would advise using a smaller amount of words for each slide so that the student isn't reading the slides but it rather listening to you speak.
Hi Student's World,
ReplyDeleteYou did a really good job on your newsletter. One thing that I found to be really interesting was the banner in your heading of the letter and the colors used throughout. I definitely would consider using a token system as I had not ever seen one prior to the start of this class. Overall great work!
